Remote Access to Lab Computers
The remote access dashboard allows you to see the list of available computers at the Wilson College of Textiles and connect whenever you need, from wherever you are. However, please only connect to a computer from the dashboard during your respective class hours or “after hours” when classes are generally not scheduled (usually after 5pm EST). Additionally, if you are a TATM student, you may connect to any computer from the dashboard no matter what room your class is physically scheduled in. All the computers have the same software installed with the exception of the computers with EAT dongles.

FAQ
- Why am I not able to remotely connect after I open the connection download? – First, make sure you are connected to VPN. If you are connected to VPN, disconnect from it > restart your computer > reconnect to VPN > try again.
- Will work saved locally to the computer be deleted? – No, while your work will still persist on the computer for a week, the availability of the computer you saved your work on is not guaranteed. For this reason, we recommend saving your work on your NCSU Google Drive or on a Textiles Network Drive.
- After connecting to an available computer, why does it say another user is currently logged in? – It is possible that another user established a connection to the computer just before you and the dashboard has not yet updated. If this happens, please refresh the dashboard page and connect to another available computer.
- Why aren’t my credentials being accepted when I try to remotely connect to a computer? – In order to use your UnityID and password to log in to the remote computer, you must be on VPN and use wolftech\YourUnityid as the user name. ex. wolftech\dvader
- Should I be using the new Microsoft Remote Desktop app? – Not necessarily, if you are using a Windows computer, you can continue to use the built-in Remote Desktop app. However, the new app provides a better user experience and allows you to do things like resize the viewing window at any time.
- Why can’t I open the remote connection on my Mac? – To remotely connect to a lab machine from a Mac, you need to first download the Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the App Store.
- Why can’t I connect to a Shima Sieki computer through the dashboard? – The Shima Sieki machines use software that does not work properly through remote desktop, and for that reason you need to use VNC viewer which is not supported through the dashboard. Though you can not connect through the dashboard, the dashboard will still display which computers are currently available.
Best Practices
- Log off using the icon on your desktop – If you do not log off, the computer will not appear available for some one to use on the dashboard.
- Use Goggle Drive or Network drives to store data – Since these are shared lab computers and you may not be connecting to the same one every time, saving your work in the cloud will allow you to work on any computer.
- Be mindful of computer availability during the week, especially weekdays – If there are only one or two computers available in a lab during the weekday, it is possible that there is a class session going on “in that room” and the computers need to be available for the students in that class, during their class period. If there are only a few computers available in a certain lab, please consider connecting to another lab computer that is located in a different room.
